Video Title:
Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Mascots, Monuments, and Memorialization | Youth in Action
Description:
How do our memories of the past inform and influence the current racial and social landscape? As part of the museum's online series Youth in Action: Conversations about Our Future, hear from young Native activists who are propelling this conversation and addressing the tension between history, memory, and the current movements happening across America. Panelists include Brook Thompson (Yurok and Karuk), Dylan Baca (White Mountain Apache), Lina Krueck (Oglala Lakota), Julian Brave NoiseCat (Canim Lake Band Tsq'escen and Lil'Wat Nation), and Alberto Correa III (Taíno). This program also features an introduction by Kevin Gover (Pawnee), director of the National Museum of the American Indian (from 2007-2021), and a musical performance by hip-hop artist Frank Waln (Sicangu Lakota). Youth in Action: Conversations about Our Future is an online series hosted by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. These moderated panel discussions serve as a national platform to amplify the efforts of Native changemakers from across the Western Hemisphere who are engaged in civic and social justice work for Indigenous peoples. This webinar originally aired on October 12, 2020. 📅 VIEW THE UPCOMING YOUTH IN ACTION PROGRAM SCHEDULE: https://americanindian.si.edu/nk360/student-programs/distance-learning The National Museum of the American Indian’s distance learning programs explore the rich, complex, and dynamic histories and cultures of Indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere .
