On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, May 4, 5, and 6, 2022, the Smithsonian American Art Museum presented a series of virtual lectures by the museum’s 2021–2022 research fellows. This recording captures the second day of talks featuring sessions three and four. The third session highlights new research in twentieth-century American craft by doctoral candidates Amanda Thompson, Matthew Limb, and Sara Morris. Their presentations examine works of clay and fiber created by Indigenous, LGBTQ, and women artists through a variety of lenses, from materiality and scale to place and the body. The fourth session focuses on conceptual and film works by a range of late twentieth-century artists. Talks by senior fellow Christine Filippone and predoctoral fellows Olga Tchepikova-Treon, Rachel Vogel, and Kaegan Sparks explore the ways in which Julio Le Parc, Paul Sharits, Douglas Huebler, and Mierle Laderman Ukeles harnessed their chosen mediums to intervene in the political, social, economic, and institutional systems of their day.
