The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) is traveling across the globe to 10 cities, exploring the global tradition and evolution of jazz. In San Francisco, the orchestra partnered with the Museum of the African Diaspora, a Smithsonian Affiliate, to offer a unique educational opportunity for students from Roosevelt and Edna Brewer middle schools. The students participated in an interactive workshop led by the orchestra’s musicians about jazz music’s historical context and influence. That evening, the orchestra presented a concert experience at SFJAZZ with Grammy-winning vocalist Kurt Elling. The program explored how San Francisco has influenced jazz music history, including pieces from Tony Bennett and Dave Brubeck.
