Video Title:
Bringing It Home - Gerald Cournoyer
Description:
The Artist Leadership Program (ALP) of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) aims to rebuild cultural self-confidence, challenge personal boundaries, and foster cultural continuity while reflecting artistic diversity. This year, we hosted four incredible artists from communities in Anchorage, Alaska; Kyle, South, Dakota; Scottsdale, Arizona; and Wendake, Ontario, Canada whose artistic experiences include printmaking, Iroquoian music and instruments, and bows and arrows. "Bringing It Home: Artists Reconnecting Cultural Heritage with Community" aims to recognize and promote Indigenous artistic leadership and knowledge, enhance the artistic growth, and development of emerging student artists and scholars. In this segment, Artist Leadership Program participant Gerald Cournoyer describes his artistic background and discusses the symbolism, patterns and references within his acrylic paintings. Gerald Cournoyer is from the Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. Gerald is focused on researching traditional symbols and mythological and cosmological designs to share with the elders of his community and facilitate a greater understanding of his goal to revitalize Lakota pottery. Gerald is also interested in addressing the issues of empowerment, increasing self-confidence and self-esteem in his reservation male population by encouraging reservation participants to work with their hands with wood or clay in the process of collecting, heating and creating pottery. This program was webcast on April 9, 2014 from Room 4025 at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D. C.
