Video Title:
John Cephas and Phil Wiggins - "Dog Days of August" [Live at Smithsonian Folklife Festival 2003]
Description:
The Piedmont blues is a type of blues music distinguished by a unique finger-picking method on the guitar. The genre was born in the Piedmont area on the East Coast of the United States, which stretches from about Richmond, Virginia, to Atlanta, Georgia. Yet Piedmont blues musicians come from surrounding areas as well, such as Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Florida. Renowned Piedmont blues musicians John Cephas and Phil Wiggins first met at the Smithsonian in 1977. Twenty-six years later, they performed "Dog days of August" at the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. The song is featured on their 2008 Smithsonian Folkways album, 'Richmond Blues,' available on CD and digital. Drawing from roots of ragtime, ballads, country, old-time string band, rhythm and blues, and more, Richmond Blues is a musical roadmap of the Virginia Piedmont tradition. While Cephas calls it "part of my heritage, part of my soul," their sound is at the same time distinctly modern, a kind of "urban acoustic blues." This recording is part of the Smithsonian Folkways African American Legacy series, co-presented with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
