Video Title:
Healing through Native Creativity: Artist Conversation with Aaron Brokeshoulder
Description:
Aaron Brokeshoulder (Absentee Shawnee) Jewelry From the pages of magazines such as Native Peoples, Cowboys and Indians, Trends, and Lapidary Journal to the Santa Fe Indian Market, The Heard Museum, and The Eiteljorg Museum, Aaron Brokeshoulder has been a common name within the Native American art community and beyond for more than 30 years. An enrolled member of the Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma with lineage from the Choctaw people of Oklahoma and Kewa people of New Mexico, Brokeshoulder is currently based out of Albuquerque, NM. His exposure and journey into the world of silversmithing began at a young age with his father, who is also a silversmith. Upon observing his father’s works of art, Brokeshoulder began learning various techniques while incorporating his own interpretation into his work. Alongside his father, Brokeshoulder began traveling to various art shows where his name and works quickly rose through the ranks. His attention to detail incorporating contemporary pieces with traditional stories that have been passed down is just one of the characteristics of a Brokeshoulder piece. His work can be found worldwide, both in museums and private collections, which begs the question, “Do you have A. Brokeshoulder?” December 4–6, 2020, the museum was pleased to present selected artists from past Native Art Markets to share stories about their art and latest creations. Through the beauty and solemnity of their creative pieces, these artists encourage us all to look forward to a future of good health and social justice.
