From rare books to audiovisual recordings, the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives’ conservators handle and preserve a wide variety of items, each made up of different materials. Ultimately, it is those materials that inform the conservators’ work and determine how they treat each object to maintain it for future generations. In other words, materials matter.
