Video Title:
Roberto Martinez - "El Corrido de Córdova y Canales" [Behind The Scenes Documentary]
Description:
Roberto Martinez, founder of Minority Owned Record Enterprises (M.O.R.E.), shares his corrido about the murder of activists Antonio Córdova and Rito Canales in this video. For nearly fifty years, Martinez made music in his beloved New Mexico. Among his songs are powerful corridos, many of which honor victims of social injustice. In 2007, Smithsonian researchers under the guidance of Dr. Enrique Lamadrid of the University of New Mexico interviewed Martinez about one such corrido—highly influential, though never previously recorded. His album 'Farewell Concert' has been out on Smithsonian Folkways since 2006. Largely a family affair, many of Roberto's children and grandchildren have performed with Los Reyes and other musical projects specializing in regional music from the southwestern United States and Mexico. 'Farewell Concert' brings together the artistry of three generations of Martínez family musicians and friends, including Roberto Sr., his wife Ramona, three of their children Lorenzo, Roberto Jr., and Doris, as well as two of their grandchildren, Larry and Sheila.
