The topic for this year's annual Living Earth Festival is "Farm to Table: Sustaining Our Future Through Indigenous Knowledge." Indigenous voices come together to discuss Native contributions to one of the most important issues today—the environment. The evening begins with the documentary Return (directed by Karen Cantor, USA, 2018, 28 min.), which examines how Native American women are reclaiming traditional foodways to improve both the physical and spiritual well-being of Native communities. A discussion follows with distinguished speakers including Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord (Diné), the first Navajo woman surgeon; Terrol Johnson (Tohono O’odham), a basket weaver, sculptor, and health advocate who promotes indigenous foods to prevent diabetes; and artist Roxanne Swentzell (Santa Clara Pueblo), co-founder and president of the Flowering Tree Permaculture Institute, which teaches sustainable living practices for arid environments. The discussion is moderated by Ben Jacobs (Osage). Maria Marable-Bunch, National Museum of the American Indian Associate Director for Museum Learning and Programs, introduces the program.
