The 1989 National Museum of the American Indian Act (NMAIA) opened a new era in relations between Native Americans and museums by giving legal weight to the spiritual and ethical concerns of tribes. To commemorate 25 years of repatriation, the National Museum of the American Indian has convened this symposium to discuss the history of the NMAIA, current repatriation practices at the Smithsonian Institution, and the future of repatriation beyond political and geographical boundaries. In this segment, Brenda Toineeta Pipestem, Chair, Repatriation Committee of the National Museum of the American Indian Board of Trustees, speaks on the panel topic, "Smithsonian Repatriation Under the NMAIA: The First 25 Years." Brenda Toineeta Pipestem, a citizen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians based in Cherokee, North Carolina, serves as the Chair of the Repatriation Committee of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian Board of Trustees. Pipestem is an Associate Justice for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Supreme Court, an appointment she has held since the year 2000. She also serves as an Associate Justice for the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Supreme Court, an appointment she has held since 2008. Pipestem also worked for six years in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs and Deputy Commissioner of Indian Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy Studies from Duke University and her Juris Doctor from Columbia University School of Law. The symposium, "Going Home: 25 Years of Repatriation Under the NMAI Act," was webcast and recorded at the Rasmuson Theater of the National Museum of the American Indian on November 19, 2014.
