Video Title:
Collections Deep Dive: Transcribing the Legacy of the Tulsa Race Massacre
Description:
#Tulsa100 #ANationsStory #APeoplesJourney May 31, 2021 marks 100 years since the deadliest race massacre occurred in American history in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Nearly 500 pages of collections from the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture documenting the the events of the Tulsa Race Massacre and the strength and resiliency of the city's Black community, were transcribed this month by digital #volunpeers. In our third Collections Deep Dive, Emily Cain (Community Coordinator, Smithsonian Transcription Center) is joined by historian and curator Paul Gardullo (National Museum of African American History and Culture, NMAAHC) to discuss the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre and the importance of transcribing related collections. Paul directs the NMAAHC Center for the Study of Global Slavery, which co-convenes three international collaborative initiatives -- the Slave Wrecks Project and the Global Curatorial Project, and the Slave Voyages consortium. Since 2007, Paul has been part of the core team focused on building the museum’s foundational collections and conceiving and crafting its inaugural exhibitions. He curated the inaugural exhibition “The Power of Place” that contains the Museum’s exhibition on the Tulsa Race Massacre. He is project director for a new exhibition entitled “Make Good the Promises: Reconstruction and its Legacies” and is co-editor of the companion volume that open to celebrate the Museum’s 5th anniversary in 2021.
