Video Title:
Bringing It Home - Nathalie Picard
Description:
The Artist Leadership Program (ALP) of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) aims to rebuild cultural self-confidence, challenge personal boundaries, and foster cultural continuity while reflecting artistic diversity. This year, we hosted four incredible artists from communities in Anchorage, Alaska; Kyle, South, Dakota; Scottsdale, Arizona; and Wendake, Ontario, Canada whose artistic experiences include printmaking, Iroquoian music and instruments, and bows and arrows. "Bringing It Home: Artists Reconnecting Cultural Heritage with Community" aims to recognize and promote Indigenous artistic leadership and knowledge, enhance the artistic growth, and development of emerging student artists and scholars. In this segment, Artist Leadership Program participant Nathalie Picard talks about her cultural and artistic background and her goals for the program project. Nathalie Picard lives in Oregon but is from the Huron-wendat Nation in Quebec, Canada, and is a professional Native flute player, storyteller and singer. Nathalie has researched material related to Iroquoian music, song recordings, transcriptions, and Iroquoian musical instruments. She plans to share her research experience with youth from her village and teach them songs, compose new songs with Wendat words with the use of traditional rattles, or drums, to show them how they could link tradition with their modern environment to express themselves today. Nathalie strongly believes that learning the traditional songs and creating new songs in the Wendat language could help the youth regain their heritage and make them feel good about themselves. This program was webcast on April 9, 2014 from Room 4025 at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D. C.
