Video Title:
Look & Listen: Indian Art and Music, Jayanti Sahasrabuddhe, vocals, with Debra Diamond
Description:
Experience Indian ragas of the monsoon season with classical vocalist Jayanti Sahasrabuddhe as she presents compositions and improvisations that convey the joy, romantic longing, and the multisensory experiences of the rainy season. She is joined by South Asian art scholar Debra Diamond, who looks at ways that Indian court artists evoked monsoon moods in paintings from Rajasthan to the Punjab Hills. Jayanti Sahasrabuddhe is a leading disciple (and daughter-in law) of renowned vocalist Veena Sahasrabuddhe. She has performed with her guru in more than two hundred concerts across India, North America, and Europe, including appearances at the Ravi Shankar’s 72nd birthday concert, the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations in New Delhi, the Tansen Samaroh in Gwalior, the Sawai Gandharva in Pune, the Asia Society in New York, the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Francisco, and the Voices of the World festival in Copenhagen. Her solo performances include concerts at Stanford University with Swapan Chaudhuri, the Bruhan Maharashtra Mandal Convention in San Jose, the Anaheim Convention Center, the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, and the Indian Music Society of Minnesota. She has performed in India at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Pune, and at the Kalabharati Performing Arts Circle and Bhavan's Cultural Center, both in Mumbai. She participated along with Veena Sahasrabuddhe in a BBC project on khayal, the classical singing genre of North India. Aside from performing, Jayanti shares her passion and dedication to Indian classical music by teaching music in the San Francisco Bay Area. Debra Diamond is curator of South and Southeast Asian art at the Freer and Sackler.
