Video Title:
Voices from Cedar (9 of 12): Designing a Whistle
Description:
In 2015, the Alaska office of the Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center hosted a week-long artists’ residency at the Anchorage museum, bringing together Southwest Alaska carvers John Hudson (Tsimshian), Norman Jackson (Tlingit) and Donald Varnell (Haida). During the residency in Anchorage and at a weekend workshop in Ketchikan that followed, John Hudson taught students how to carve a whistle from red cedar. The educational videos presented here introduce the Southeast Alaska tradition of making wind instruments, with a focus on the whistle. John – a Master artist – shares his in-depth knowledge, and he teaches about the materials, tools and techniques for making a cedar whistle. A limited number of free DVDs are available upon request: please email Biddisond@si.edu or Crowella@si.edu. To learn more about Alaska Native cultures, please visit the Smithsonian Learning Lab site “Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center in Alaska” at https://learninglab.si.edu/org/sasc-ak. There you will also find more instructional video sets and also educational resources for teaching at home or in a classroom.
