Smithsonian conservation projects involve communities around the world and here in our own backyard. Join the head of the Smithsonian Conservation Commons, Ruth Stolk, researchers, and community spokespeople who together exemplify stories of Earth Optimism. Dr. Matt Ogburn works at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) and leads the Fisheries Conservation Lab. Matt will share the work he’s doing in the Chesapeake Bay, working closely with local Patuxent River riverkeeper Fred Tutman. Dr. Dennis Whigham also works at SERC and leads the Plant Ecology Lab. He works in Alaska with Coowe Walker, director of the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The Salmon and People Project in Alaska is an outgrowth of Chesapeake Bay research on land-water linkages. Both projects highlight the importance of scientists collaborating with the communities in which they work, ensuring environmental and ecological protections for the surrounding land.
