Summary:
A nonreservation boarding school was opened at Forest Grove, Oreg., in 1880. In 1885 it was moved to a site north of Salem that became known as Chemawa. The school has been called both Chemawa and Salem. From 1925 to 1938 the school had agency duties for the Indians of the Grand Ronde and Siletz Reservations and nonreservation Indians, but most of its records relate to school activities.
