Article in eleven parts; parts four through ten relate to Africa.
In West Africa, Gëssfeld's expedition has failed, and efforts by Captain Homeyer and Dr. Lenz are underway. Savorgnan de Brazza is again trying to follow the Oogoue River. In Central Africa, Colonel Gordon is exploring Lake Albert, and an American, Colonel Long, sent by Gordon to visit King M'tesa of Uganda, reports on the ceremonial beheading of 30 men in his honor. Previously unexplored regions of the southern Sahara and central Sudan are becoming known through the efforts of Gustav Nachtigal, and Major Roudaire is still trying to create a huge inland sea at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Finally, the extraordinary, militarized expedition of Henry Stanley has reached Lake Albert. Selections from his letters are included.
Also noted: to further its slave trade, the Egyptian empire has expanded into Nubia, Darfur, and the upper Nile.
