Abstract, pages 52.
In the 18th century, the Liverpool firm of William Davenport & Co. exported large quantities of Venetian glass beads for barter in the African slave trade. In doing so, they helped prop up the Venetian glass bead industry. This essay opens the ledgers of William Davenport & Co. to examine how these beads were bought and bartered from Venice to Liverpool to Africa.
