Argues that too much emphasis has been placed on the phallic iconography of the Yoruba trickster deity Esu and that other Esu iconography is more complicated and contradictory than Western phallic interpretations allow. Reconsiders interpretations by earlier scholars on Esu - - Joan Wescott, Hans Witte, John Pemberton, and Margaret Drewal, among others.
