In this brief report on the collaborative archaeological project between the Institut des Sciences Humaines in Bamako and the Dutch universities in Groningen and Utrecht, Van der Waals describes the work at Jenne and discusses the historical and cultural context of the Inland Niger Delta region within which Jenne must be understood. The contemporary realities in Mali are also considered as a backdrop against which archaeological work proceeds: plundering of sites and archaeology as a facet of nationalism.
