Muzzolini gives his own opinion about some present deadlocks in the research on Saharan rock pictures: the traditional relative chronology has become inadequate, absolute chronologies put forward for early periods incredible "high" dates, which are incompatible with the data from other disciplines, and for recent periods, some remnants of a romantic thesis from the 1930s on the "Sea peoples" are still in use. The problem of interpretation, for some schools which do not even present an easily readable obvious meaning, is hardly approached, and no structuralist study has been outlined. A plea is made for continually comparing rock art results with the data from other disciplines. -- original abstract.
