The paintings of Wifredo Lam reveal the many intellectual streams that influenced his life. Surrealism, Negritude, African and Caribbean nationalism, Cuban Santeria and Haitian Vodun are all evident in his work. Not surprisingly, his circle of friends and associates included Picasso, CeĢsaire and Breton. Linsley deciphers these elements in Lam's corpus in which African sculptures and New World orisha form part of the visual vocabulary.
