Illustrations, map.
Terracotta figures from Komaland had turned up in casual finds before the controlled archaeological survey of 1985 took place. That fieldwork uncovered many more terracottas. As the known corpus grew, it became possible to classify it into five types: heads on conical pegs, full human figures, janus figures, animals, and a miscellaneous group. Although many unanswered questions remain about the origins, dating, chronology, and function of these Komaland terracottas, Kröger addresses all these concerns and sets his discussion within the wider context of terracotta traditions of West Africa and the history of northern Ghana.
