Mary Stainbank's clay portraits of various Zulu personalities predates the search for native iconography in KwaZulu-Natal. Her clay sculptures, relief panels and stone carvings frequently depicted Africans, sometimes as metaphors. In wood and stone she often portrayed Zulu women and children.
