Summary:
In the eighteenth century rolling chairs, known as bath chairs, were used to transport invalids. During the Civil War an early version of the modern wheelchair was developed to meet the needs of the growing number of disabled veterans. In response to this increasied demand the George F. Sargent firm, manufacturer of wheelchairs and other special needs merchandise, grew significantly. This catalog features innovative wheelchair models employing light-weight materials such as cane for seats, springs, large spoked wheels with rubber tires and adjustable mechanisms so that wheelchairs could be self-propelled and comfortable. The creation of products focusing on the disabled was also advanced by the patent furniture movement, the growth of hospitals and the ability to incorporate the latest improvements in wheel design developed by the bicycle industry
