Notes:
Nigerian art has been studied as cultural anthropology and as ethnography; it has been analyzed as a contemporary quest by artists to synthesize their artistic past with modern expression. Western scholars have dominated the field of Nigerian art studies, and Western ideas (including the civilizing mission, colonialism and racism) have dictated the direction. It is time for Nigerian scholars to assert control over the orientation and content of Nigerian art studies.
