Notes:
Printed factory cloth is a staple in West African markets and forms the basis of women's wardrobe. The cloth patterns usually bear names that convey proverbial meaning, and thus serve as a non-verbal communication when worn. Such practice is common in West Africa. The Anyi of Côte d'Ivoire provide a case study in the cultural complexities of how "speaking through cloth" operates. Cloths that commemorate political leaders or events are part of this communication network.
