A partial collection of engravings excerpted from The sculpture gallery, a series of eighty-one engravings accompanied with descriptive prose and illustrative poetry by James Dafforne and other living authors, published at London by Virtue and Company. The plates have the credit line, "London: published for the proprietors by George Virtue, 25 Paternoster Row."
Some of the engravings are accompanied by handwritten captions.
Some of the captions refer to the display of sculpture at the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations, held at Bryant Park in 1853.
SCDIRB copy 39088019502830 has an accession note penciled in the upper left corner of the recto side of the first leaf of text: Presented by C.D. Walcott, Office Art Room, KW, 8 May '19.
SCDIRB copy has stamp on recto of first leaf of text: Smithsonian Institution Office Library, Jan. 14, 1915; accession number 24144.
SCDIRB copy has a contemporary blind-stamped full leather binding with raised bands, gilt-lettered spine title, marbled endpapers, and all edges gilt.
