Summary: The lack of contextual information about African art objects removed from the continent may be attributed to more than the crude circumstances by which early removals were made (war booty, theft, desecration of shrines, illegal transactions). Even for the conscientious ethnographer, there are difficulties in getting at the real meaning of objects as they are used and endowed with significance by the culture from which they derive.
