SCNHRB c. 2 (39088015710130, 39088015710171, 39088015710213) was formerly owned by Elliott Coues, who had the three volumes interleaved with blue tissue paper. Coues' extensive and meticulous ms. annotations in ink have been made throughout the three volumes on the interleaved pages and in the margins of the text. Coues' annotations, providing additional references to articles and books on the various genera and subgenera in Gray's hand-list, are keyed to the hand-list by citation numbers.
SCNHRB c. 2 has ms. note signed by Coues on sheet of paper tipped in before t.p. of pt.1: The owner of this copy, probably already [1875] the most valuable one extant, is earnestly besaught to continue the additions of references for the sake of whomsoever may after him use the volumes ...
SCNHRB c. 2 with ms. note in pencil by S.N. Rhoads, 1906, on front free endpaper of pt.1: The flower of Dr. Coues' early genius and energy in nomenclatorial research was devoted to the mss. revision and correction of this classic work. Thousands of finely written notes and data stud and interleave its pages.
SCNHRB c. 2 tipped-in on t.p. verso of pt.1: Letter on letterhead stationery of the Office of the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, dated Washington, July 10, 1878, from Elliott Coues to Mr. Tileston, discussing Ernest Ingersoll's capabilities as editor of an unnamed New Hampshire newspaper column.
