"The principal part of the general text is based on Gould's Monograph of the Ramphastidae, 1833-1835, of which it is, in places, a literal translation; but considerable of the matter is rewritten or revised and there are additional species described herein for the first time. The plates are sometimes redrawn and reduced from Gould, but frequently altered or designed afresh, while the illustrations of the new species are entirely new." --Catalogue of the Edward E. Ayer Ornithological Library.
The color plates were lithographed by F. Sturm after illustrations by John Gould, Elizabeth Gould (who is not credited in the plate captions for this edition, but whose name appears on the plates from the 1832-1837 English language edition as an illustrator and lithographer), Edward Lear, and from nature; these plates were printed by J.C. Flachenecker, G.N. Renner & Comp., and Fr. Stadler.
The publication was undertaken without the knowledge of John Gould, who lamented the loss of income from sales of the edition for which he was not the copyright holder. Sauer notes (page 47), "In a three-page letter dated 31 July 1841 from Nuremberg the Sturms wrote that they would have acquainted Gould with their design to publish his work on the Ramphastidae, but he was in Australia."
"Beobachtungen über die Anatomie der Tukane von Richard Owen, mit Zusätzen und einem Nachtrage von Rudolph Wagner", is on pages [77]-[83]. This article is accompanied by two black and white plates numbered I-II which were lithographed by G. Scharf and A. Köppel and printed by Th. Kammerer in München.
