Nyau is a secret society associated with masked initiation rites among the Chipeta and Mang'anja in southern Malawi. Its most distinctive masquerade is the anthropomorphic kapoli, but there are others -- kadewere (here portrayed as a European) and nchaule, or zoomorphic masks. Several types of drums are also associated with nyau. Kubik compares nyau traditions with those of neighboring matrilineal peoples in eastern Angola, southern Zaïre and Zambia and in Mozambique and Tanzania (see the table on page 38).
