For a detailed discussion of the dates of issue, see item number 4 in G.C. Sauer's bibliography of "John Gould's major published works" in John Gould the bird man: a chronology and bibliography.
Plates preceded by title page, dedication leaf for Reverend Joseph Goodall, list of subscribers (3 unnumbered leaves in total); and Preface (pages [i]-ii), Introduction (pages [iii]-vii), "Synopsis specierum" ([i] page on 1 leaf) and the list of plates ([i] page on 1 leaf).
Each leaf of plates is accompanied by a leaf of descriptive letterpress and a blank guard-sheet; some of the text leaves are printed on both sides.
The hand-colored lithographs include one printed on a folded leaf ("Trogon resplendens") and 35 full-page illustrations, signed: "Drawn from nature & on stone by J. and E. Gould; printed by C. Hullmandel."
A second edition, entirely rewritten and illustrated with new plates, was published between 1858 and 1875.
