America's best known Black dance troupe, named for their artistic director and choreographer, combine elements from African tribal rituals, gospel songs, and urban street life into their pieces. Features four performances: Divining, set to rhythmic drum music and choreographed by Judith Jamison; Revelations, set in the American South during the Depression, uses spirituals, gospel music, ragtime, folk songs, and blues; The Stack-Up, set to modern jazz, takes place in Harlem and shows a young man destroyed by drugs; Cry, choreographed by Ailey, is a tribute to all Black women and shows their anger and struggle, but also their celebrations.
