Summary:
Roosevelt writes Robinson of expenses incurred by the naturalists from the Smithsonian, Edgar A. Mearns, John Alden Loring, and Edmund Heller, working on the Smithsonian African Expedition of 1909-1910. Roosevelt notes the staff were "in sore straits for funds. I have advanced them money; I am exceedingly anxious that they shall continue, for they are doing remarkable scientific work ... The big expense of the expedition is nine-tenths due to the scientific work; enormous quantities of salt ... the transport of huge hides and skeletons ... traps and supplies ... etc."
