Notes:
Title devised by cataloger.
Prints photographically reproduced from Carpenter's original drawings, which appear to have been made with the help of a camera lucida.
The illustrations are bound in with extensive handwritten indexes on lined paper, probably attributable to W.H. Dall of the Smithsonian Institution (United States National Museum). In addition to handwritten identifications of each figure illustrated in the plates, the volume also includes an alphabetical index to the names of species illustrated in the plates, and an alphabetical index of species named in the text of Carpenter's Catalogue of the collection of Mazatlan shells in the British Museum, keyed to page numbers.
Plates 1-60 were later reworked and published in Carpenter's Illustrations to Catalogue of the collection of Mazatlan shells (Ithaca, N.Y. : Paleontological Research Institution, 1966), edited by Doris C. Brann.
The volume has two bookplates from the library of WIlliam Healey Dall, with his shelf-mark: "K-1-g Carpen."; also the stamp of the Division of Mollusks Sectional Library and the Smithsonian Library.
Also available online.
Philip Pearsall Carpenter was an ordained Presbyterian minister, social reformer and conchologist noted for his detailed catalogs of various shell collections in the British Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, and elsewhere.

SCNHRB copy appears to have been used by Dall as the companion volume of unpublished plates and index for his copy of the British Museum (Natural History) Department of Zoology's Catalogue of the Reigen collection of Mazatlan Mollusca in the British Museum (Warrington : Printed at the Oberlin Press, 1855-1857), which was compiled and printed by Carpenter. Carpenter (1857); plates 61-68 illustrate specimens from Carpenter's "Review of Prof. C.B. Adams's catalogue of the shells of Panama, from the type specimens" (Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 1863, pages 339-369); and plates 69-74 illustrate specimens from Carpenter's article "First steps towards a monograph of the Caecidae, a family of rostriferous Gasteropoda" (Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 1858, pages 413-443).
