Maximilian von Lechtenberg, the 3rd Duke of Leuchtenberg, largely inherited his bird collection from his father, Eugène de Beauharnais, and from his father-in-law, Czar Nicholas I of Russia. After Maximilian's death, his collection was acquired by the state of Bavaria and relocated to Munich. Much of the collection was destroyed during the bombardment of Munich in World War II, although some specimens survived and are now in museums in Munich, Bamberg, and Erlangen.
Summary:
Catalog of the bird collection of Prince Maximilian, Duke of Leuchtenberg & Prince of Eichstätt, comprising 3589 specimens, primarily of Russian and non-European birds, including some from Australia, Southeast Asia, South America, and the South Seas.
