The name of the Conservation Analytical Laboratory was changed to the Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education on January 26, 1998.
Summary:
In 1968, the Conservation Analytical Laboratory is established as an independent unit to support museum curators in authenticity studies and the preservation of artifacts. It had begun in 1966 as part of the U.S. National Museum but in 1968 was expanded to include training of conservators and work with all Smithsonian museums.
