Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution for the year 1901. Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1902, p. 32, 54-55.
Summary:
The East-North range of the Arts and Industries Building was cleared of artifacts and fitted with simple chairs, a lantern stage, and a speaker's platform. The walls and ceiling were painted shades of green, and adjustable window screens mounted on the windows ("fordarkening the room when the stereopticon is used"). Flemish tapestries depicting scenes of Alexander the Great (deposited in the Museum by General Sheridan in 1886) were hung on the walls. Originally the hall had been established in the Northwest and then later in the West-North range, but had been crowded out of existence as the halls filled with exhibits.
