The Office of the Registrar initiates a new Congressionally mandated Smithsonian collection inventory program using an automated data processing system. This is the first thorough tabulation of the Institution's collections since the Smithsonian was founded in 1846. Under the program, the responsibility for coordinating inventories on an Institution-wide basis is assigned to the Smithsonian Registrar.
Image comes from Accession 11-009 and the photograph was printed in the Smithsonian Torch, July 1983, in an article on the collections inventory, which can be found in Record Unit 371, Box 5, July 1983.
Summary:
Susan Schreiber, a museum technician with the Division of Community Life of the Department of Social and Cultural History, counts sports team buttons, medals, program books, and baseball cards in a storage area of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Schreiber was one of hundreds of people who worked on the five-year inventory at the Smithsonian. In American History alone there were were about 16 million objects. She is seated and counting the collection in the drawer. Also open is a large drawer containing sports buttons and another drawer containing baseball cards.
