Within the feudal system of the Tokugawa Shogunate, women were marginalized. In "Sekiheki Ki" written in 1847, EMA Saiko (1787-1861) wrote about the case of a female patient of her nephew EMA Gen'eki. Saiko described the details: the year of the medical treatment, the age and sex of the patient, symptoms, prescription, progress after prescription, form of the stone, and the cause of the disease.
