Notes:
The United States National Museum instituted a significant effort to collect material related to World War I during the war's final years and immediately after the war. These materials were immediately put on prominent display throughout the United States National Museum.
Summary:
Memorandum to Professor William Henry Holmes regarding the receipt of a loaded shell. Curator of the Division of History Theodore T. Belote's initial instinct was to accession it. However, in view of the dangerous character of the specimen, he recommends the best course is to return the loaded shell to the Ordinance Bureau noting that the Smithsonian has been careful to specify only unloaded specimens of this type be sent and to request an unloaded specimen of the same type.
