Kjell Bloch Sandved of the Office of Exhibits, National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), at the commission of Porter Kier, then Director, NMNH, prepared these photographic materials to document personnel and activities of NMNH in 1975.
In 1978, the Smithsonian Office of Biological Conservation was established with Edward S. Ayensu as director. The responsibility of this office is to coordinate the various environmental conservation activities already in progress in the Institution and encourage a variety of new projects related to environmental conservation, especially within the area of staff interest. In 1978, he together with Robert DeFlipps authored a Smithsonian Institution reference book entitled "Endangered and Threatened Plants of the United States."
Ayensu received a doctoral degree in the biological sciences from the University of London and is the author of numerous books and articles on science, technology and the social and economic development of developing countries.
