Joseph Morrison began his career with the Division of Mollusks, United States National Museum (USNM), in 1934 as a Senior Scientific Aide. He was made Assistant Curator in 1942 and Associate Curator in 1946, a post he retained until his retirement in 1975. The Operation Crossroads was an expedition to Bikini and the northern Marshall Islands in 1946 under the auspices of the Department of the Navy. The expedition centered on the relative abundance of fauna before and after the atom bomb tests. Specimens were collected for the purpose of comparison and to make possible a study of anatomical variations among the various island fish populations.
