Summary:
Letter from Joseph Henry, first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, to Hannibal Hamlin, a senator from Maine and Vice President from 1861 to 1865, April 22, 1870. In the letter, Henry expresses gratitude that a proposition was put forth in the United States Congress to convert the Washington Canal into a closed sewer. The Canal ran along side the Smithsonian Institution Building, or "Castle," cutting the Smithsonian off from downtown DC and spreading unpleasant smells across the Smithsonian grounds.
