The Smithsonian Institution's Home Page (www.si.edu) when first launched on the World Wide Web on May 8, 1995. The site is officially opened with a demonstration in House Speaker Newt Gingrich's office. The site contained more than 1,500 electronic pages and contains overviews in Spanish, German, and French. Within the first 24 hours the page received about 100,000 hits.
