Beets was appointed a secretary in the Division of Insects, U.S. National Museum in 1949. She then worked on the creation of the National Museum of American History and served as the NMAH Registrar from 1973 to her retirement in 1983.
Miss Virginia Beets, with the Department of Entomology at the United States National Museum, now known as the National Museum of Natural History, is wearing a necklace of Brazilian beetles set in gold. In Brazil the beetles have such beautifully colored, hard-shelled coats upon their backs that they are sometimes set in pins and necklaces like precious stones.
