Summary:
This scene depicts the artist's view of the causes of the Civil War: at center Liberty, who is dressed in an American flag, is wounded and seated on the ground; on her left an abolitionist holds up a book with the title, "Higher Law"; he stands with a black servant who wears an apron; posted on the wall at left several posters with names of famous abolitionists; at right, a Southerner holds a pair of slave's shackles with the label, "Our Rights"; he stands with his black slave.
