Summary:
Eastern Portal is a site-specific sculpture that engages the pedestrian to look through the sculpture to the tidal estuary and the mouth of the harbor that inspired the founding and development of Newburyport, Massachusetts. The definition of portal in the title is to "view through" and also to define the harbor as a port on the Atlantic Ocean. It is carved as a continuous two sided Fibonacci spiral oriented with the river and the solar ecliptic. The carved spiral begins on one side of the natural Vermont marble then continues to spiral through to the other side. The beginning and end of the spiral forms a seat which allows the public to fully engage with the sculpture.
