Summary:
Entrance gate to the University featuring two stone pillars with bronze relief plaques on the front. The bas-relief on the west pillar depicts a bust portrait of James Sidney Rollins, seen in proper left profile, with moustache and long beard. The plaque on the east pillar depicts a bust length portrait of John Hiram Lathrop, with beard. Above each plaque is a banded inscription with the carved Seal of Missouri above it, flanked on the right by a carved flame or lantern with two quills, and on the left by a carved globe on a stand with two quills. A carved "M" with decorative foliage appears in the center above the band on the rear and inner sides of the pillar. The pillars are topped with a cornice, and the west pillar has a cornerstone on its southeast corner. Each pillar is flanked by a low wall that curves around in front, topped with a lamppost.
